We built and installed a rain barrel last week at Just-Sailing. The 55 gallon barrel was first filled in a 12 hour rain. It is amazing to see how quickly the barrel fills and how much water you are collecting. We use the collected rain water to wash down boats and water the flowers. This saves us time and money all while being green. When you think about it, rain water should be collected and used. Why wouldn’t we collect it?

Just-Sailing partnered with the NJ Watershed Ambassador and AmeriCorps Programs hosted by NJ Department of Environment Protection‘s Division of Watershed Management to host a Rain Barrel Workshop on Saturday, April 7th, between 3-5 pm at Lake Lenape East by the Lighthouse in Mays Landing to promote water conservation. This program is facilitated by Watershed Ambassador Alice Riordan and is open to the community. According to Storm Water Management, by installing a rain barrel at your home you will reduce flooding in your yard or your basement, by collecting the water and using it for watering plants or slowly releasing it and allowing it to sink into the ground while protecting our rivers and streams. Water stored in your rain barrel is water that won’t rush off into our streams. By decreasing the volume of storm runoff, rain barrels also help moderate stream erosion and the resulting pollution that is impairing our waterways.

The suggested donation is $10 to attend the workshop and learn how to make your own water barrel and $40 for those that would like to attend the workshop and bring a completed water barrel home with them. All donations benefit the Accessible Sailing Program for individuals with special needs ages 10 and up.
