MAYS LANDING, NJ – January 7th, 2012 Students from the tri-county area gathered on Saturday to learn about our local estuaries in Atlantic County from Watershed Ambassador, Erin Walsh. A watershed model was utilized to show students how salt water from the ocean mixes from the fresh water from our local rivers and streams to create a nursery.
The Great Egg Harbor River, located just south of Hamilton and Egg Harbor Townships brings the fresh water from Lake Lenape in Mays Landing and points further north over the dam to mix with the saltwater coming in from the Atlantic Ocean. This area between Mays Landing and Somers Point in the Great Egg Harbor Bay acts as a nursery for numerous plants, fish, and macro invertebrates.
Students gathered around the model to send rain water runoff down the river and into the sea. “The students, acting as fresh water, traveled from glaciers, to aqueducts, to ground water for drinking and flushing your toilet. They were amazed to see how little fresh water there is on planet earth and how easily it can become contaminated. They are shocked by how dirty the water gets along its journey. – Jessica Servis, Executive Director.”
Just-Sailing hosts the speakers bureau on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 10am-12pm at the Lighthouse at Lake Lenape in Mays Landing.
